Green Power: My Hilarious Smoothie Saga and How to Not Turn Into a Spinach Monster

Green Power: My Hilarious Smoothie Saga and How to Not Turn Into a Spinach Monster

12 September 2025

Okay, let's be real. Blogging about food is basically a constant battle with my own cravings. It's like living in a delicious minefield where I'm both the miner and the, well, the person who eats all the cake. Lately, the baking bug bit HARD, and I may have, ahem, overindulged in the name of 'recipe testing'. My body, bless its cotton socks, was not impressed and started hoarding calories like they were going out of style.

Last week, it was so hot that my kitchen felt like a pizza oven. I just couldn't face cooking dinner, so my partner and I decided to switch to green smoothies for our evening meal. It was part laziness, part desperate attempt to regain some semblance of balance. Besides having to wash and chop enough spinach to feed a small army every few days, I was happy to ditch the cooking for a bit.

At first, it was all very virtuous and, dare I say, healthy. Thanks to the magic of ground flax seeds, the smoothie was surprisingly filling, so I wasn't heading to bed with a rumbling tummy. The ice made it wonderfully refreshing, which was a godsend in the heat. Plus, it tasted sweet and fruity - just enough to sneak all that spinach into my system without my taste buds staging a revolt. And, of course, all that vitamin-C in the oranges was helping me absorb the iron from the spinach, so I was really making the most of this health kick.

We managed about a week of this. Then, things took a turn. Let's just say I started experiencing some 'unpleasant side effects'. After a quick Google, I discovered that, yes, you can have too much spinach! Who knew? If your stomach isn't used to raw spinach by the bucketload, take it easy. Start small and slowly add more into your diet. You've been warned!

The Recipe (with a pinch of caution):

Yields: 750ml / 2.5 cups Prep time: 15 minutes

Ingredients:

  • 2 tbsp ground flax seed
  • 1 orange, peeled (remove any seeds)
  • 100g / 3.5oz raw spinach (stems included, because we're eco-warriors)
  • 1 ripe banana (frozen is good)
  • 1 ripe peach
  • 2 tsp grated ginger (or more, if you're feeling spicy)
  • A squeeze of lemon (optional, for extra zing)
  • 10 ice cubes

Method:

  1. Chuck the flax seed and orange segments into the blender. Blend until the orange is liquidised.
  2. Add the spinach and a splash of water (just enough to get the blender going). This makes the smoothie smooth with no leafy bits.
  3. Add the banana and peach. Blend until everything's nice and smooth.
  4. Add the ginger and lemon (if using) and blend again.
  5. Finally, add the ice cubes and blend until you reach your preferred consistency.
  6. Pour into glasses and try not to drink it all at once.

Important Notes:

  • Wash your spinach well, especially if it's from your garden.
  • If you are not used to having a lot of raw spinach, start slow.

Enjoy this green concoction, but remember, even good things can be overdone. Happy blending, and may your spinach adventures be less, uh, eventful than mine!
