Freezer Meal Tips and FAQs
How long do these meals keep in the freezer?
When stored properly, with most of the air removed, these meals should last at least six months in the freezer.
Do you have to thaw your freezer meals before cooking?
Nope! Most of these recipes can go straight from freezer to cooker. The exception is meats in the slow cooker, those should be thawed first for safety. Thaw in the fridge for 24 hours before cooking.
Can you put frozen glass containers straight into the oven?
While it's possible (we've done it many times with Pyrex), it's not foolproof. To be 100% safe, thaw oven-bound recipes in advance, use aluminum pans, or line the glass containers with parchment paper for easy transfer.
How do you avoid freezer burn?
Get as much air out of your storage containers as possible before freezing. This is a bigger issue for meals that spend months in the freezer, not for meals that are used within a couple months. If you are planning to keep meals longer use plastic bags to help squeeze out the air.
Should you freeze liquids with your freezer meals?
It's a personal preference. We generally prefer to add liquids (broth, water, tomato sauce, etc.) fresh, but you can absolutely freeze them all together.
Can you use fresh vegetables in freezer meals?
Yes! We've tested these recipes with both fresh and frozen produce with great results. Don't let anyone tell you that you can't freeze potatoes or mushrooms.
How do you make the freezer meal process fast and easy?
- Buy pre-chopped fresh or frozen veggies.
- Skip the measuring cups and spoons, eyeball it!
- Don't do too many meals at once. Focus on making 4-6 at a time. It keeps it fun and from being overwhelming.
Do you need an Instant Pot for freezer meals?
While an Instant Pot isn't required, it is a huge time saver for freezer meals. If you decide what's for dinner at 4pm, you can still have a homemade meal on the table by 6pm, with no thawing needed!
Are these freezer meals healthy?
Yes, these recipes are made with real food ingredients, with minimal processing and an emphasis on fresh vegetables, lean proteins and whole grains. However, healthy means something different to everyone, but using whole foods as much as possible is a good rule of thumb.
